The Team Hawkes trained Leebaz has justified his $1.50 favouritism to win the 2014 Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup.

Jockey James McDonald settled Leebaz behind leaders Malavio and The Great Snowman in the 1600m race before he surged to the lead with 250m to go. Wistful looked a chance to snatch the victory from the favourite 100m out but Leebaz was able to dig deep in the closing stages to win by almost a length. Outsider Keep Cool finished third with The Great Snowman fourth.

While Leebaz has been nominated for the Group 1 Doomben Cup, a Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign seems unlikely for the four-year-old Zabeel gelding.

“He did all that he had to do and he got the job done,” trainer John Hawkes said after the race.

“He will most probably go to the paddock I think; we will see how he pulls up and the boys and I will have a talk about it.

“It is really about the horse, but I honestly think that he will go to the paddock.

“I think that he is a potential Group 1 horse in the autumn and the spring and we have been really patient up to now; the horse will tell us.”
