April 28th, 2015

Having nominated two of his stable starts for the featured event on Saturday, Trainer Tony McEvoy has revealed he will only accept a position in the final field of the 2015 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) for Evangelist.

Talented stallion Mouro was also included in 2015 Hawkesbury Gold Cup nominations but has continued to struggle with joint issues; forcing McEvoy to re-assess the course of action with the six-year-old this time in.

Revealing he has suffered from joint conditions his entire life, McEvoy told AAP he is pleased with the overall condition of the Grand Slam entire but will not risk him in the 2015 Hawkesbury Gold Cup.

“He’s had trouble with his joints all his life and it looks like it has gone far enough on that joint at the moment,” McEvoy said.

Evangelist has registered competitive form over four starts this time in but will need good ground if to perform in the Hawkesbury Cup, according to McEvoy.

“Evangelist needs good ground,” he said.

“I want to run him in the Cup but if it’s wet he won’t be going around and I’ll save him for Scone.”

Posting four wins and a further seven minors through his 19 career starts so far, Evangelist began his racing career abroad, under the care of leading British trainer Sir Michael Stoute before transferring to the care of McEvoy at the conclusion of his 2013 campaign.

Winning his Australian debut over 1500m and placing second in the Listed Murray Bridge Gold Cup (1600m) most notably in 2014, the Oasis Dream gelding failed to beat a single runner home in the Braossa Cup Day Handicap (1200m) first-up this time but boxed on for a credible fourth in the Listed CS Hayes Memorial Cup (1600m) on March 9th.

Running an agonizingly-close second in the Listed Golden Mile (1600m) at Bendigo on March 21st, Evangelist failed to handle the heavy going when eighth in the Listed Tails Stakes (1630m) most recently on April 11th.

The 2015 Hawkesbury Gold Cup final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, today (Wednesday, April 29th).
