Hawkesbury Gold Cup Field

The Hawkesbury Gold Cup field is usually comprised of strong local sprinters and middle-distance runners. In recent years, however, the increased purse and the growing reputation of the race have attracted quite a few foreign horses to compete. More and more in recent years, renowned trainers such as Peter Snowden and Gai Waterhouse have had horses in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup field. Unlike the early years of its running in the 1980’s, the modern Hawkesbury Gold Cup field is more likely to be made up of champions than local racehorses.

In the field for the original running of the Hawkesbury Gold Cup over half of the nominated horses in the 2015 Hawkesbury Gold Cup field are foreign raiders. With such a high number of imports competing against the local horses, the 2017 Hawkesbury Gold Cup field will be hotly contested. Now that the race has made the move to May, rather than August as in 2013 or November before that, the Hawkesbury Gold Cup field has a high threshold of trainer skills. Names such as Gai Waterhouse, Steve Engelbrecht, Peter Snowden, and Peter Moody amongst others appear on a star-studded 2017 Hawkesbury Gold Cup field.
